Glossary of Statistical Terms

Most of the official Baldwin-Wallace College baseball records are calculated using formulas adopted from Rule 10-29, “Determining Percentages,” of the NCAA Baseball Rules.

Batting Average

The most popular measure of hitting prowess. Calculated by dividing the number of hits by the number of official at bats.

Earned Run Average

The average number of earned runs allowed per nine innings pitched. Calculated by multiplying the number of earned runs by nine and dividing that product by the number of innings pitched, including fractional innings.

All “per-game” pitching statistics in the B-W Baseball Online Almanac are based on nine-inning games and are calculated in the same manner as earned run average.

Fielding Average

The standard measure of fielding ability calculated by dividing the total number of putouts and assists by the total number of putouts, assists and errors committed.

Slugging Percentage

A measure of power-hitting ability calculated by dividing the total number of bases earned from all hits by the number of official at bats.

Winning Percentage

Calculated by dividing the number of games won by the total number of games won and lost.

Since 1978, the Ohio Athletic Conference has disregarded ties in determining winning percentages and conference standings. This practice has been followed in determining all winning percentages in the Online Almanac.

The official Baldwin-Wallace College baseball records for on-base percentage and stolen base percentage are calculated using formulas found in the “Glossary of Statistical Terms” of Total Baseball: The Official Encyclopedia of Major League Baseball.

On-Base Percentage

A measure of the ability to get on base calculated by dividing the total number of hits, walks and times hit by a pitch by the total number of at bats, walks and times hit by a pitch.

Rule 10-29-f of the NCAA Baseball Rules includes sacrifice flies in the denominator of this formula. Total Baseball points out, however, that “The effect is to penalize a batter in his on-base percentage by giving him a plate appearance while at the same time crediting him in his batting average by deleting the plate appearance.”

For this reason, and a lack of consistent historical data on sacrifice flies, the Total Baseball formula has been used throughout the Online Almanac.

Stolen Base Percentage

The rate of successful stolen base attempts. Calculated by dividing the number of stolen bases by the number of stolen bases attempted. In the Online Almanac, the result of this formula is multiplied by 100 to give a percentage value.

The formula used to determine the official Baldwin-Wallace College baseball records for strikeout percentage is the formula used by B-W head baseball coach Bob Fisher for player performance evaluations.

Strikeout Percentage

A measure of strikeout frequency for batters calculated by dividing the number of times struck out by the total number of at bats, walks, times hit by a pitch and sacrifices.
